Why Houseplants Are Good For Your Mental Health

I know firsthand how houseplants can be good for my mental health from the joy and rewards I get from my houseplants but I have not researched the topic.

Here are a few photos of my plants and you can see I work hard to keep them healthy and alive. I had a difficult time learning how to not over-water succulents but I have come a long way, only killing two recently.

Copilot had some interesting ideas about mental health and houseplants.

Houseplants offer several mental health benefits, making them more than just stylish decor. Here’s how they can positively impact your well-being:

  1. Improved Mood and Well-Being: The visual presence of houseplants, whether it’s the calming green foliage or the beauty of ornamental flowers, can make you feel more relaxed, secure, and happy1.
  2. Increased Compassion and Patience: Caring for plants encourages empathy and patience, as you learn to nurture and tend to their needs.
  3. Enhanced Self-Esteem: Successfully caring for houseplants can boost your confidence and sense of accomplishment.
  4. Reduced Stress: Being around indoor plants has been linked to reduced stress levels and improved mental health. Even just being in the presence of indoor plants can lead to better cognitive performance, lower physiological stress, and greater pain tolerance2.

So, consider adding some greenery to your living space—it’s good for your mind and body! 🌿🌱34

I agree, just a plant or two can liven up your space and motivate you to care for the plant and watch it grow. It will love you back.

    1. Lucky for me even facing South gets enough light for many houseplants. I have 2 in my office. Since I’m feeling better I have replaced all the dead ones from the past years and gone wild taking care of them. I just bought 3 more, but that is reaching the limit. I spend timme everyday checking and watering them. I’m still working on improving my succulent skills, it’s so easy to over water. You’re welcome to visit any time. We could have tea and the dogs would love you up! :)

  1. Beautiful Plants. We have tried plants at home but we are not “Green Thumb People.” We cannot keep them alive. I would love to have plants here but so afraid I won’t treat them the right way.

    1. You have to start with the easiest plants like ivy, they need water about once a week and grow fast and easy to cut several pieces off and grow roots on to make another plant. What I have found to be the most vauable tool other than my finger is a water meter. Each time you replant the soil mixture is a little different unless you use straight potting soil, which is great for most plants. Buy indoor houseplant potting soil and don’t skimp on the soil, I like bead fertilizer because it last 3-6 months and feeds evenly. The only other thing you need is light, buy a window or an artificial light. Ivy can live for many many years. It would be a good project for your kids, get them away from the Tv and phone a bit. :)

        1. Ivy is the simplest plant to grow and adjust to all types of light except of low light. Just don’t over water and like I said don’t skimp on a low quality potting soil. You will be surprised at how fast they grow and they always brighten the house. I just ordered a large one today for a special rabbit planter I bought. I can not have enough plants but getting close to max. Out of planters and space.

    1. Thank you, good thing you didn’t see how many many I neglegected or killed over the past several years. Yesterday 4 new plants arrived and I have lots of repotting to do. It makes me feel so good. When they have a baby my effort is rewarded. :)
