How to make your jar candles last longer

No matter what I do my candles always end in a tunnel. you know the one, wax inches above where the wick is. I found this great article in the December’s Real Simple magazine. I’m anxious to see if my luck with the tunnel issue.

Abigail Cook Stone the founder of Otherland Candle Company says trim the wick to 1/8 inch every time you light the candle. It helps the wax burn slower at a more even pace and avoid soot build up around glass. “A good rule of thumb is to burn your candle an hour for every inch the candle is wide.” says Kristen Pumpfrey, Creative Director of PF Candle Company. So if the candle is two inches wide, two hours should do it. “Blow out candle gently ( to prevent wax splatter” or use a sniffer to extinguish.

    1. The main thing to,look for,in buy wicks is there is lead in them. The US banned.using lead but all other countries have not changed. I know because of the research I’m doing tp open my store. The fall has set me back but I’m determined to have something to sale by end of year. It’s a shame because now the time of higher sales but this a hobby I,have to remind myself. Take kare.

        1. There are many people who makes wicks in US that don’t contain lead. I am only using wood wicks because I don’t want to tell somebody it doesn’t contain lead and it does. I am making my bath salt/soaks, soaps and what to start with my candles but haven’t found quality wood wicks. Beeswax is very expensive and I can’t waste the wax. Candle and other handcrafted items will be in the store. I’m focused to make product as many products I can with Certified Organic. I even found a supplier with 89% certified organic. I’m using that lotion as unscented for people like me with very sensitive skin. I’m working hard to write up all the information for the products I’ve made and get the store up soon. That’s one goal today. The fall put a big dent in the time line and I fell again two nights ago. :)

          1. First, let me apologize for taking so long to repy! I love handmade candles and the smell of candle making. I have very sensitive skin and can’t wait for the lotion to be available! I’ll be catching up on my reading tonight to see what you’ve been up to, but I sure hope you are feeling better. I am so sorry to hear that you fell again.
