Calling All Orchid Lovers, HELP!

I starting to think my Phalaenopsis Orchid has seen its better days. This past season it put on one stalk but only one flower. It’s about three years old and it’s so huge, I’ve never seen an Orchid so big.

It’s 17″ wide by 18″ wide by 14″ tall. It’s huge!

The roots look good and are greenish-white, two are possibly new but I cant’ say for sure. I have it in an Orchid potting mix and use a time-released Orchid fertilizer. I water once a week and it has a grow light on it three hours a day. It’s also kept in a brightly lit area of the house.

Is it a keeper??????

I would love to hear your questions and feedback.

  1. I may be late with this comment, but your post just popped up in suggested blog posts, so I figured I’d write you a comment…

According to an Orchid Expert (aka my mother, who has 9 happy orchids), fertilize yours once a week with 1/2 a teaspoon in 1 gallon of water. Do that once a week for 3 weeks, then on the fourth week, just do a regular watering with no fertilizer. Keep repeating this cycle.

Also, yours probably isn’t getting enough light. Hers are under some lights (not grow lights though) all day (10-12 hours, I think), plus they’re in a bright area of the house.

One of her orchids recently bloomed. It was so happy it got 17 flowers! Yes, we counted. 🙂

    1. I’m so jealous! Mine have both grown new leaves so I’ll see once they stop to see if flowers will follow. The leaves a very healthy and pretty. Thanks for taking the time to check with the Pro and giving me some suggestions. Have a great day.
