“I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman”.
I remember when the song was released, it was against the grain and received plenty of criticism but what a great anthem that has stood the test of time. Listen to the words carefully. The message is just as important today as it was in 1971. Helen Reddy is so graceful and genuine.

During an interview many years ago Helen said the song wasn’t written for women only but was for everyone. I have to ponder that. Was she also talking about sexual equality?

I was 5 or 6 years old at the time and I would go over my best friends house and her mother would play this song over and over. Her mom was newly divorced which was rare back then. Not too many divorced at that time. I listen to the song now.

Helen Reddy was very kind to me. When I was working on my first book which was about women’s experiences with mentoring, I asked if I could interview her. Helen said she wasn’t available because of a demanding schedule but wished me the best. She wrote a lovely personalized note.

What a great experience. She comes acroos as genuine and she speaks her mind in a gental way not with bravado. Not like many hard core feminist. She’s done up around.
