The word ketchup has a surprisingly fishy origin—literally! It traces back to the Hokkien Chinese word kê-chiap, which referred to a fermented fish sauce used centuries ago in Southeast Asia.
This savory concoction made its way through trade routes to places like Malaysia and Indonesia, where it became known as kecap or kicap—still the word for “sauce” in Indonesian today.

In Australia we call ketchup: Tomato Sauce.

Here it’s in a bottle and we use it on our fries, burgers and other items. Tomato Sauce is something we use to cook with as a base.
