Emergency rooms nationwide are reporting a record-breaking increase in tick bite cases, according to new CDC data.
July 2025 is already surpassing previous highs set in 2017.
Director of the University of Rhode Island’s Center for Vector-Borne Disease and its TickEncounter Resource Center, Dr. Thomas Mather, and Dr. Tom Daniels joined the Morning Joe to discuss.
They say Lyme disease is still the top concern when it comes to tick bites, but note that ticks can transmit other pathogens as well.
With ticks being so plentiful right now, they say it’s likely that more people will end up getting sick from tick-borne infections.

I usually get tick bites multiple times in warm weather, but I’ve been avoiding the woodsy places and spraying my socks, so haven’t had one in a couple months. Thanks for the reinforcement.

I’m one on that list. I got a tick bite in June. It would have been cheaper for me to go the ER than have a FaceTime appointment with the doc. I’m still having issues because of the antibiotics.

Are you still on them or is left over issues?

My blood pressure is so high that the doctor just took me off the antibiotics. I went on the antibiotics because of a tick bite I got last month.

How long are taking them for this time?

I was supposed to take the antibiotics for 30 days but my body thinks every little change is a trauma. I got through three weeks.

I know you like to live naturally, but now would be a good time to see a Lyme doctor. Lyme will not cure itself, and if not treated properly early, it can become chronic. I can say for sure, you don’t want to have to go through advanced treatment.

We have the critters all over our back yard up the hill. They are the bleckist things ever. It is one reason why I don’t get a long hair dog. Bleck. Great macro though! Their backs almost look tortouise-like.

I spent close to two years taking IV Antibody Treatments several days a week, and I thought I was going to die. I was so fortunate to find a well-known Infectious doctor who had recently turned his training towards Chronic Lyme. I’m forever grateful.
