I’m so proud my family history includes Native Americas from the Cherokee tribe. I don’t know who exactly married a Cherokee in the 1800’s, I think it was my granny’s grandfather. The best I can determine is I’m 1/16th Cherokee. I encourage you to read the brutal story of The Trail of Tears, it’s best book I’ve found that truthfully shares the inhumane treatment while being forced from their homes. Expect a few tears.
The American Indians have been raped fron the land since mankind landed in what became America. Years later our government took all their land and made them live of Reservations with little to no help from the American Government. It was vicious, making the tribes march to their new reservations. Many were killed, women were raped and when the Rolls of Cherokee’s were opened to prove they were American Cheerokee’s so many were distrusting of the government they refused to sign. I can only find one relative who is registered. If you didn’t register, you were not considered a member of the tribe and you and family received no benefits later offered to the American Indians.
American Indians lived in America for several hundred years and lived all over the United states. My perception about the tribes is they are survivors, were handed the worst and have made the best life with it. I won’t say it a good life because reservations have the highest rates of alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide. The casino’s look like and you would think the employees are paid nice, not true. Most live in extreme poverty.
It’s a sad in history for America, if the governments wants something, like land, they will take it.

My cousins live in an Indigenous community in Montana, and they share some similar concerns.

It’s appalling to me, Native Americans were here possibly 400 years before the white man. It’s like how America works today, if he does not like, he gets rid of. I’m a proud American but it can difficult if I look at what the government did to Native Americans. Their name says it all, Americans.

My trip to visit my cousins in Montana was enlightening and made me realize there are people who have deep roots in the land who suffer because of greed and racism.

I don’t know who was the first to start killing off Native Americans, it was settlers but I don’t recall the dates when this major decimation happened. The 1930’s come to mind but my gut says it might have been earlier. I don’t remember all that I’ve read. But to think the first settlers started killing them to have their land is unsettling but it’s no different today. Sad to say.

How cool to be part of a proud and meaningful group, Melinda. Our Indigenous people are rarely considered in our country. Nor do we discuss their ill treatment.
I give to St. Joseph’s Indian school because they care for the children and encourage cultural activities. They are Lakota, but I feel a bond with them for some reason.

Native Americans are just that Americans. You have to be a certain age or have the heratige to know what our government did, not aligned with Americans. The thought that has continued to exist and the government has not admitted what they did and has not allow anyone who wants to live outside of the reservation to do so with reparations. It’s something I feel strongly about but I don’t go there often, it’s too painful. Glad you are helping the community.
