Things I’ve Learned In 61 Years Part One

Your family is yours for life, you don’t have to like them.

The previous generation’s mistakes don’t have to continue, you have a choice.

Times have changed, women don’t have to be housewives and serve their husbands hand and foot.

Having a life away from your family is the healthiest thing you can do for yourself.

There is no perfect and why knock yourself out trying. Do the best you can.

Toxic is toxic, cut all toxic relationships and habits from your life.

Don’t overfocus on your health issues, accept them and stay on top of but don’t wallow.

If you are to move forward in life you have to quit looking back. Deal with your issues and move on. Don’t wallow.

There is no bad or good day of the week, each day is a fresh start. If you expect a bad day that’s what you’re going to get.

When life seems to be going wrong, redirect your thoughts to what is going right.

Life is short, we were never promised it would be easy and quit feeling entitled, you’re not.

Find something no matter how small that makes you happy, it’s often the small free things that bring joy.

To be accomplished in life you have to focus on others, not your own needs. That makes you self-centered.

Learning about others is a joy in itself. You never know what you have in common.

Always thank someone for a kind gesture, it also makes you feel better.

The less you judge others, the less you judge yourself.

Why Houseplants Are Good For Your Mental Health

I know firsthand how houseplants can be good for my mental health from the joy and rewards I get from my houseplants but I have not researched the topic.

Here are a few photos of my plants and you can see I work hard to keep them healthy and alive. I had a difficult time learning how to not over-water succulents but I have come a long way, only killing two recently.

Copilot had some interesting ideas about mental health and houseplants.

Houseplants offer several mental health benefits, making them more than just stylish decor. Here’s how they can positively impact your well-being:

  1. Improved Mood and Well-Being: The visual presence of houseplants, whether it’s the calming green foliage or the beauty of ornamental flowers, can make you feel more relaxed, secure, and happy1.
  2. Increased Compassion and Patience: Caring for plants encourages empathy and patience, as you learn to nurture and tend to their needs.
  3. Enhanced Self-Esteem: Successfully caring for houseplants can boost your confidence and sense of accomplishment.
  4. Reduced Stress: Being around indoor plants has been linked to reduced stress levels and improved mental health. Even just being in the presence of indoor plants can lead to better cognitive performance, lower physiological stress, and greater pain tolerance2.

So, consider adding some greenery to your living space—it’s good for your mind and body! 🌿🌱34

I agree, just a plant or two can liven up your space and motivate you to care for the plant and watch it grow. It will love you back.

I Bought Myself A Birthday Present

I turned 61 this month and splurged on a new piece of furniture for my office. The old piece was tiny and had no storage space. The new cabinet is colorful and has plenty of room to store all the goodies I don’t want to lie about. I haven’t used the television in years so I don’t mind covering it with photos and flowers. Treating oneself is important, and I consider it a boost to my mental health.

I hope you take care of yourself too, it’s not the cost, it’s the joy you get from it.

Daily Writing Prompt

I don’t participate often but this question caught my attention.

Are you seeking security or adventure?

While security is important to me, I prefer adventure within reason. I have been an adrenaline seeker for years and only stopped due to health reasons. I’ve been fortunate to race a car on a quarter mile track, parachute from an airplane at 13,000 miles up, take a hot air balloon ride, parasail off a boat in the ocean, scuba dive in several countries including shipwreck diving, and get lost in a few countries where I didn’t speak the language. The most difficult times were when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Toledo, Spain.

What do you look for, security or adventure?

I Love Art, Here’s One Of My Favorites From Jim Stallings

I had an appreciation of art long before I bought my first piece and later while traveling, I would buy a piece to remind me of the trip. I only have five expensive pieces and the rest from my travels are street art or maps. Maps are another thing I collect and love picking them up while traveling. I bought this Jim Stallings while in Maui at an outdoor showing. He thanked me and we talked for a while, he was so down to earth and I didn’t even know who he was, just that I loved this piece. I think it was $800 and I display it in my bedroom without a frame on a decorative easel. His father owned a restaurant chain that I ate at regularly, on the menu was the first plant-based patty I had. It was so good it was hard to believe it wasn’t beef.

Here’s More About Jim Stallings

Stallings is considered an artists’ artist. Fascinated with art and artists from a very early age, private painting classes at age eight started the course of Stallings’ destiny. He earned a degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and then spent as much time as possible in the museums of London and Paris while earning a diploma from City University, London. Stallings then embarked on a backpacking odyssey for over two years that included more than five hundred miles in the Grand Canyon and the surrounding states ending in Denali National Park, Alaska. After four months in Alaska Stallings flew to Maui with only a backpack and a duffle bag where he began his artistic career.
Stallings hung his first early paintings in Maui restaurants which sold quickly leading to a number of gallery shows. He then opened his own gallery in Lahaina, Maui enjoying the friendships he made with collectors from every state in the United States and all over the world.
Stallings has explored the relationship of music and pure color for his entire artistic career. Deciding early on to pursue canvases of whimsy and purity, questions about the relationship of music, vibrations and visual art led Stallings to paint live on stage with symphony orchestras including the Long Beach, San Diego, Honolulu and the Russian National. Painting music as visual art was a defining moment in Stallings’ career. He enjoys exploring the harmony of music and color and their positive effects on the human spirit. He has worked with world renowned scientist, physicist, conductors and musician regarding the physics and energy of music.
After creating and selling more than two thousand original works of art, Stallings still pursues his love of painting classical and jazz music. He has also painted jazz music live at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Napa and New York. Never complacent, Stallings continues to stretch his creative limits while sharing his passion for the arts.

Here are a few I like from his collection.

Sending a Special Thanks to Uganda, Thailand, Yemen, Turkey and Kazakhstan

Thank you for visiting my blog and allowing me into your life. You’re what makes blogging so special. I have not been to any of the countries but have wanted to go to Uganda for as long as I can remember to see the Silver Back Gorillas. They are amazing animals and I can see their human behaviors. Diane Fosset spent years in Uganda researching the Gorillas and is famous for her research and the relationship she built with them. Now new researchers are picking up where her research left off, I’m so glad there is a new generation dedicated to the survival of the Gorillas and sharing their knowledge.

Sending A Special Thanks To Mali, Russia, Brazil, Spain And Greece For Visiting

I love to see what countries visit my blog, it actually hits my travel desire. Each week I look further into countries I’m not familiar with and this week I took a closer look at Mali. Mali, is a landlocked country of western Africa, mostly in the Saharan and Sahelian regions. Mali is largely flat and arid. The Niger River flows through its interior, functioning as the main trading and transport artery in the country. Sections of the river flood periodically, providing much-needed fertile agricultural soil along its banks as well as creating pasture for livestock. Although Mali is one of the largest countries in Africa, it has a relatively small population, which is largely centered along the Niger River. Agriculture is the dominant economic sector in the country, with cotton production, cattle and camel herding, and fishing among the major activities.

St Petersburg, Russia will always have a special place in my heart, I loved the city’s deep history, the Cathedrals, the architecture, and above all the kindness of the people. I knew three words in Russian and the people who didn’t speak English, many of them, tried so hard to help me, taking extra time when I was lost or not able to find a museum I really wanted to see. The history of St. Petersburg is fascinating and at one time it served as the capital of Russia. The Hermitage Palace and museum is something everyone needs to see, it is mind-blowing and houses not only fine art but the greatest collection of Faberge Eggs

I visited Madrid, Spain in 1988 and it was my first international trip. I keep a photo of a couple performing with string puppets in the square on my bookcase. We made the trip to Toledo, A UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes the Cathedral of Toledo and the Alcázar fortress. The Cathedral was reportedly built in the Middle Ages and is one of Spain’s most important Gothic structures. At the same time, the Alcázar fortress has played a significant role in Spanish history, serving as a royal palace, military fortification, and now a museum. The fort was a trip back in time, on the huge wooden doors you could see where it was hit with cannonballs. The architecture was undescribable and being on the river made it even more special. The locals were welcoming and tried to help me so hard when we were lost and I needed to go to the bathroom. Try to speak that in body language. The exquisite handmade Ladro porcelain pieces are made in Spain and I found a special one to bring my Granny. We also found a beautiful black plate with gold detailing, all made by hand.

Greece is high on my bucket list, with its deep history, magnificent blue water, cathedrals capped in blue, crazy uphill walking, and white-covered buildings and houses and the mob. I’ve read that mob still runs parts of the country although I bet they would prefer I not mention. Greece is also known for gold, when traveling you can pick up gold jewelry for a fraction of the price in America. There a plenty of shops to choose from and the designs are creative and playful. That’s just the tip of the iceberg that the Greek Islands are.

Brazil is on my travel bucket list, the country has so much to offer.

Thank you so much for stopping by.

WordPress 15th Anniversary

Has it been 15 years? My original blog on WordPress was Defining Memories which I opened in 2005 and closed when I started Looking for the Light in 2014, that date is in question now. My archives show posts for Looking for the Light starting in 2014 however there are a few extra archives from Defining Memories.

During 2012-2013 I contributed to a toxic collaborative blog until I came to my senses and got the out of Sesspool. The blog may have been toxic but I met several people who are still a part of my life. Gavin from Noir is a dear friend and we talk almost every week, Gavin is an amazing human being and an excellent photographer. Daniel from Hyperion Sky is the best storyteller I’ve ever met and maybe read. He is currently supporting a family member with dementia and doesn’t post often and Army of Angles, she is not blogging at the moment.

In 2014 I was a co-founder of Survivors Blog Here, it was a collaborative site with many talented bloggers from all walks of life. It was all-consuming but it changed my life. It was closed and deleted this year.

The math doesn’t add up but close enough for me.

15 Year Anniversary Achievement

Happy Anniversary with WordPress.com!

You registered on WordPress.com 15 years ago.

Thanks for flying with us. Keep up the good blogging.

Thanks to the support of many, I’m turning 61 years old and haven’t felt this good in years and I’m just getting started. Yes, I’ve slowed down for ongoing health issues and my mental health. Today I put my mental health at the top of the list, every day.

It’s been a wild ride filled with life’s journey, good and bad. Thank you for visiting my blog, following, and commenting, you’ve filled my life with joy.

To the special bloggers in my life, there are no words only gratitude. You’ve helped me grow, soften, and express myself, you’ve mentored me and best of all is the connection with you. :)

#Weekend Music Share-LL COOL J – Saturday Night Special ft. Rick Ross, Fat Joe

This is the rap I like! The lyrics are real, not trash, not raunchy, with no half-dressed woman being demeaned and you can understand the words. LL Cool J is the greatest, he is multi-talented, an awesome actor, respectful, has a heart of gold, and sets a great example for all. Always keep your word!

I’ve Made A Few Updates To My Blog

Hello, so glad you stopped by today.

To allow more comments and my ability to communicate with others, I’ve changed the settings so that you don’t have to log in or be a WordPress member.

I’ve updated my About Me page slightly and continue to work on making Organizations That Can Help a drop-down menu. I’ve done it in the past but currently, it’s not correct.

One area I want to expand is Organization that Can Help, please provide any you know of so I can create a much better resource. Thanks. :)

Look for more changes as I work to improve my blog.

Thank you for reading and visiting my blog.

I’m Slowing Down, Way Down

I’ve been slowing down the past 6 months by working hard to stop multi-tasking and be in the moment, listen, and communicate clearly. My new medication is at full power, I’m feeling better than I have in over 5 years, and taking in every minute. I’ve kickstarted my indoor and outdoor plants, and have been repotting those who are long overdue. I’m a plant and flower person and treasure my outdoor standbys that come back every year. I am testing my skills to revive a Gardenia plant.

I had the same amount of time before but it was spent aimlessly on health crises, new diagnoses, unstable mood, and Infusion Treatments. I was not able to mentally or physically do it.

                                                                                                                                                     My favorite Rose

This idea started when I looked at the number of posts I’ve written since 2014. The numbers show I am slowing down, and it feels great.

Here’s a quick look at the numbers

2014 25

2015 1,031

2016 4,812

2017 5,984

2018 7,041

2019 21,414

2020 52,466

2021 45,619

2022 42,787

2023 23,814

2024 as of June 18th 14,312

I’m proud of the post I’ve written and at 61 years old next month, I’m glad I got in touch with what is important to me, and slowing down is important for my ongoing health issues, Bipolar Disorder, Cognitive Impairment, and Immune Disorders. Above all my Mental Health.

Thank you to all who have visited my blog over the years, it’s been a wild ride, you’ve seen me grow as a person, shared my health struggles and all that life has brought my way for 10 years. Your posts and connections have opened my mind, warmed my heart, reinforced what is important and you have filled my life with joy. I don’t plan on stopping, just writing at my own pace, not my uber-driven mind. You can look for more posts on travel, art, and photography.

Peter the Great in St Petersburg Square

Hoofs up means they lost their life in battle, my friend Gavin taught me.
