Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

I prefer both because they offer such different opportunities yet if I had to pick it would be water. I have loved the water or playing in water since I was a small child and once older I discovered the love of falling asleep being rocked by the water. There’s nothing like waking up to the sunrise drinking a cup of coffee while the water calms you.

I’ve had one bad experience on my friends 40ft boat. One day the weather was beautiful, I was sail boarding when I saw this massive black cloud coming our way. I rushed back to the boat and the waves on the way back to the dock were massive, he dealt with the waves while I was down stairs scared but constantly picking up items that had fallen including myself. I felt like it took forever. So glad he was at the helm.

The mountains are beautiful because the terrain is always different and you can see for miles. I was a hiker at one time but stopped after climbing a 1,000 feet to reach the top of Verna Falls at Yosemite National Park. We were rookies at climbing mountains and the climb reminded me why. You had to hike in circles all the way up, I had only one pole and several times I thought about stopping but knew better. The waterfall made every step worth it.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I’m an American and I once was proud to say that. I still love America and it is home for me but the politics, division in the country and the rise in physical and cyber crime is very concerning. Almost 10 years ago everything changed with the focus of our government with the biggest impact is neither party working together, they out right refuse. How are they helping Americans grow?

Back to the question. I have looked at other countries as an excersis and have found the countries that live by the values and government style I perfer and way to cold. I’ve thought about Austrailia because I think in many ways we are similar and while visiting Sydney, everyone was so welcoming. It made me think I was back home in Texas.

There are locations that have crossed my mind but in reality every country has it’s issues and living in America is far less expensive than any country I researched. I would not feel right moving away from my home country but wish for some magic to turn America around to better times.

Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.

I was traveling to the airport to fly to Russia the day of 9/11, the airspace was closed for two weeks and as soon as it was lifted off I went to St. Petersburg, Russia. Traveling alone wasn’t anything new to me but it’s unusual in many countries, I stood out as American but everyone was so gracious to me. I didn’t know the language or anyone who lived there, and I liked it that way.

Walking everywhere, visiting the Hermitage twice, two other museum’s, street artists, went to the ballet, visiting a couple of restaurants outside of the hotel. When I was lost communication was difficult but often a point in the right direction was all that was needed.

I observed the Costra Nostra, mafia, up close since most nights there were enjoying life in a separate lounge area by the bar. One day I stopped into a small restaurant for lunch, a man and women were the only two there. While I was eating my soup and the man walked past when leaving, he looked at me and said American. I guess you had to be there to get the vibe. It was such a joy for me because I’m fascinated by the Mafia.

I remember going into a fur shop, it was freezing cold and I had not packed for the weather. We had no verbal way of communicating but by showing her the type of furs I liked, I left with a beautil silver fox coat. I’m not a fur wearer but as I struggled with the cold, I wanted the warmest coat I could buy.

I could talk for hours about my trip especially the Astoria hotel, one of two five star hotels in the city. From the moment the Mercedes picked up at the airport, the entire staff welcoming me when I arrived to how they helped and protected me. I’ve never experienced a city like St.Petersburg and look for the day I can return.

My trip of a lifetime to date.

If you won two free plane tickets, where would you go?

For me to travel to Jordan, the conflict in the Middle East would have to change dramatically. I’ve wanted to see Jordan since I saw a feature on the Travel Channel. The awe-inspiring Petra, Dead Sea salt baths and the people are so inviting. They are so generous by taken in so many refugee’s.

The list of places and countries to travel to is long but with planes falling out of the sky every day, I’m not flying.

St. Petersburg, Russia

What a great view out of my hotel window.

Preparing To Travel: What Do You Need To Think About

There are a number of things you need to know before embarking on a travel adventure. For many people, going on a trip is something they’ve always wanted to do, but it’s not something you can simply just start without any preparation. You need to do a lot of planning and research, and you also need to learn how to control your expectations. Because every location and journey is unique, it’s important to brush up on the essentials before you go; read on to find out more.

Saving Money

If you want to spend less money when traveling, you need to learn how to save money. There are a lot of things that might add up if you approach your adventure like a typical vacation, so it’s vital to spend some time thinking about what’s most important to you. To save money, you may have to give up staying in posh hotels and dining out every night.

Reducing the amount of luggage you bring, learning how to get inexpensive flights, and even traveling in the off-season can all help you save money when you travel. When you’re planning a trip, it’s a good idea to look for ways to save money and tailor your trip accordingly.

Pack Carefully

What you can and cannot do while you’re gone will be dictated by how you pack, so prepare accordingly. Of course, if you’re just going to stay in one hotel, it doesn’t hurt to bring a few extra things with you since you won’t be dragging them around from place to place. If, on the other hand, you want to travel, you’ll want to learn to pack light since you don’t want to be carrying heavy baggage from place to place and run the risk of losing things on the way.

It’s difficult to pack lightly if you’ve never done it before, but a general guideline is to bring just what you need, bearing in mind that you can purchase some items at your destination if you really need to. Check that you have adequate room for your crucial papers and gadgets that you will need while you are there. You’ll most likely need your phone, a power bank, a camera, and a travel adapter to charge all of your electronics. If you’re planning on camping or hiking, you’ll also need your specialist equipment from ECOGEAR FX

Important Documents

Depending on where you’re going and the country you’re coming from, you’ll require a different set of paperwork. You may be required to travel with a certain passport and a visa in some cases. If you don’t do your homework in advance, your trip will be a disaster; you might not even get to go in the first place. You should always double-check your understanding of the requirements before proceeding so you aren’t disappointed and don’t lose a lot of money.

Also, it’s a good idea to keep a copy of your papers in a separate location just in case. On top of this, always have all your passport information and additional passport photos with you on any trip. This could save you a lot of trouble if yours goes missing. Having a backup plan in case you lose your passport while traveling might make things a lot less stressful.

Describe your most memorable vacation.

I was on the way to the airport to fly to St. Petersburg, Russia when 9/11 happened, we heard about the disaster on the radio. Back home I called my gramps to ask him if he thought this was the beggining of WW3, he replied it to soon to tell.

The airspace was closed for two weeks before I could make the trip. What was so surprising is people from around the globe were coming up to me to say how sorry they were, some were offering hugs, it was comforting.

The city was more than In could ever ask for, the people, the food, the art, the architecture, the ballet, I could go on. I was told that most women do not travel alone so people would know I was American. The hotel staff took great care of me including calling the restaurants to let them I was coming and to look for me.

View out of my room

I was not alarmed or scared the entire time. Traveling back to St. Petersburg is a desire of mine, the political situation would have to change greatly.

Happy travels.

Tips For Leaving Your Pet Behind When You Travel

Traveling is exciting, but for pet owners, it may come with some guilt and anxiety about leaving a pet behind. Whether it’s a short weekend trip or a long vacation, leaving your pet can be difficult. But doing this is a great option if you’re worried about your pet not adjusting well to new surroundings. Thankfully, with proper preparation and planning, you can ensure your pet is safe, comfortable, and happy while away. Here are some tips for leaving your pet at home when traveling.

Update your pet’s ID

You may think you have your pet secured indoors before you leave home, but some pets always have a way of sneaking out. So, before setting off, you should ensure your pet is wearing a collar with updated ID information on their tag. This way, you wouldn’t worry too much about your pet not returning home if it gets lost. Updating your pet’s ID tag information gives it a better chance of being returned home when it gets lost.

Leave your pet with someone they know

There are countless reasons why you shouldn’t leave your pet at home alone. A better and safer option is to send them to someone they know. But if you choose to leave them at home, have a friend, family member, or a neighbor your pet knows and recognizes to come around. Better still, leave your pet with them at their home. And be sure to provide some supplies like food, water, waste bags, a pet first aid kit, etc. It’s important to leave your pet with someone they already know or at least someone they see regularly.

Provide your pet sitter with the updated information

After updating your pet’s ID information, be sure to tell your pet sitter if you’re opting for one. Also, please provide them with any other information they need to care for your pet in your absence. For example, what personality does your pet have? Is it quirky? Does it struggle with anxiety? Are there any health issues the pet sitter should know about?

You might also want to allow your pet sitter to meet with your pet several times before you leave. They way, the two will establish a good relationship and get to know each other. That makes it easier for both parties to get along in your absence.

Assess your pet’s needs

Different pets have different personalities. And while some pets do well when left alone, other pets will pretty much get depressed without the presence of their caretakers, especially if it’s a long absence. In general, pets that are used to having a lot of interactions with others may struggle on their own when left alone for longer periods, while pets that prefer isolation will not mind (perhaps not even notice) your absence. Dogs, for example, are very social, with most breeds experiencing separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods. If your dog does not do well alone, consider hiring a dog sitter or enrolling them in a boarding school for dogs. Also, younger pets may not do well alone, compared to older ones, as they still need a lot of interaction.

Wordless Wednesday-Plummer Building In Rochestor, Minnesota

I’m glad you joined me on Wordless Wednesday and I hope to see you soon.

The second photo was taken from their website; the majestic building shines through. David took the first photo through a window in the Mayo Clinic buildings.

Highlights of the building include:

  • Bas relief caricatures – These images provide visual variety on the lower levels of the building’s exterior and represent themes ranging from St. George, the patron saint of England, slaying the dragon (honoring the Mayo family’s English ancestry) to a happy elephant and sad donkey (reflecting the presidential election of 1928, the year the building opened, when Republican Herbert Hoover defeated Democrat Al Smith).
  • Bronze doors – Standing 16 feet high and weighing 4,000 lbs. each, they are always open, closing only for great solemn events such as the death of Mayo Clinic leaders and national tragedies. In earlier years, Joe Fritsch, nicknamed “Joe Clinic” served as doorman and unofficial goodwill ambassador.
  • Carillon – Mounted in the tower of the Plummer Building, the 56-bell carillon brings the gift of music to downtown Rochester. Learn more about the Carillon.
  • Lobby – Marble from around the world adds beauty to this area. A mosaic of inlaid marble highlights the large registration counter. Note the bronze tablet on the wall near the lobby entrance. On August 8, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented the plaque to the Mayo brothers on behalf of the American Legion.
  • Elevators – The elevators were originally run by an operator whose job it was to safely bring patients and staff to the various floors. Now automatic, the elevators still retain their vintage charm.
  • Historical Suite – The third floor of the Plummer Building contains the offices of Dr. Will and Dr. Charlie Mayo, in addition to the elegant Board of Governors Room with the brothers’ diplomas and awards. Other artifacts in the Historical Suite include the 1950 Nobel Prize for discovery of cortisone. Formally named the W. Bruce Fye Center for the History of Medicine in 2015, this area Historical Suite is open for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Read More »

Blogger Highlight-Croatia, the War, and the Future

Thank you for all the great feedback on the Blogger Highlight series, I’ve enjoyed meeting each blogger and sharing their site with you. This week we highlight the blog Croatia, the War, and the Future. We have followed each other for several years and I have learned much from her. I’m not particularly interested in Croatian politics but her posts teach the history, and how Croatia has evolved.

Croatia, the War, and the Future

Ina Vukic – Croatia: people, politics, history, economy, transitioning from communism to democracy

Ina has been a tireless volunteer on humanitarian aid and fundraising for victims of war in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially war orphans. From 1991 to beginning of 1994 she contributed in lobbying for international recognition of Croatian independence and Croatia’s rights in defending its territory and people from military aggression by Serbian forces. For this dedicated voluntary work Ina was awarded two Medals of Honour by the first president of the Republic of Croatia in 1995 (Commemorative Medal of the Homeland War and Order of the Croatian Trefoil). Ina has also written hundreds articles for newspapers in Australia and Croatia on the plight of Croatian people for freedom and self-determination, developing democracy in former communist countries. She holds two graduate and one post-graduate university degrees, specialising in behaviour, clinical and political psychology and management.

Ina has done some incredible work in her career including working with Vietnam Veterans for which I’m grateful.

Questions I ask Ina:

M.

I remember you saying you worked with Vietnam Veterans, can you share a paragraph about your work?

I.

I guess Australia was not different to the USA when it came to Vietnam Veterans suffering PTSD and for many it became chronic and lifelong. I believe up to 30% of Vietnam Veterans suffered PTSD, some acute and relatively short term and for most it became chronic albeit in varying degrees of severity of symptoms between individuals.  As a Clinical Psychologist in Sydney Australia, I worked in the Mental Health Hospital system mainly concentrating on disorder diagnostics and behaviour therapy in people with disabilities including dual diagnosis with mental illness as one of the two and cognitive impairment as the other. Outside my normal working hours, I also maintained into the late 1990’s a private psychological service through which I offered therapy and support to several Vietnam Veterans who had chronic PTSD and needed long-term support in order to maintain employment and family relationships at a good level. The purpose of my work was to reduce symptoms of PTSD especially concentrating on spousal relationship, which is an aspect of normal life that often suffers the most in PTSD sufferers and their spouses. Being useful in life, being and staying meaningfully employed and managing family and personal relationships were the main focus points to living with PTSD despite the horrors seen and experienced on the war front that haunt sufferers for decades.

M.

Are there other jobs you are extremely proud of?

I.

Paid jobs I am extremely proud of revolve around my roles as Manager and then CEO of disability services that focused on closing institutions in which people with disabilities lived and helping them move into normal houses in the community. This was achieved by early 1990’s in the state of New South Wales in Australia and I was so proud to have played a significant and instrumental role in this in Sydney. After that my job as CEO of government-funded disability services for more than two decades was to ensure that people with disabilities become a part of the normal community they live in, that human rights and anti-discrimination measures are in place and that access to everything a community life has to offer, with appropriate assistance, happens for them.

The unpaid job I am extremely proud of over the many years, which I applied myself to in my free time, was political activism and lobbying foreign governments from Australia to help Croatian people achieve independence from communist Yugoslavia. My family was one of hundreds of thousands families that in late 1950’s and early 1960’s, as applicable to my family, felt hard communist oppression to the point of being denied work because one did not accept the communist party, and consequently had no alternative in life but to emigrate from Yugoslavia in search of freedom and living life without fear. Australia offered a safe haven and “the sky is the limit” if you put your mind to it sort of opportunities in life.  After in May 1991 almost 94% of voters in Croatia voted for independence at the referendum I became one of the most politically active women of Croatian origins in Australia (and Western-world-wide) with view to help Croatia achieve independence and win the was of aggression that was waged against her because people wanted independence from Yugoslavia and a rule of democracy, not communism, not socialism.  Besides these activities I engaged relentlessly in fundraising for humanitarian aid, particularly for the many refugees, displaced, and children who had lost one or both parents in the war. I was and still am very proud of the two Medals of Honour I had received in 1995 from the President of Croatia for my exceptional and significant contribution to the Homeland War and the creation of the democratic and independent state of Croatia.

M.

I.

I guess the above post on 9/11 tragedy detail would be among my favourite posts because it holds within it the wonderful reality that people from all backgrounds and ethnic descents give their lives in efforts to save others no matter where they are or where they have grown up. And it this post it happens to be an American Croatian.

I am also quite partial to this post as it demonstrates bravery for an “adopted” country that after immigration becomes the second homeland.

More Awesome Art From The Mayo

One of the greatest things about The Mayo Clinic’s awesome artwork collection is that it’s all donated by families or artists. Every possible type of art you can imagine is on display, and unfortunately, I could only capture a few. My husband took a few photos and I hope to provide them as well. The architecture in Rochester is very diverse so walking is a great way to capture great photos. There are many skyscrapers in the downtown area so catching a glimpse of them from an adjacent building with windows you can access is the perfect way to get a great shoot.

Even the lighting looks like art.

Media Corporations Have Crossed The Line By Sending Reporters Into Hurricanes

I’ve always questioned the value of seeing a reporting out in the hailing winds and rain trying to stand up, what is the point. We know there is a storm, the news is covering it in the studio and we have better photos of what is happening than the few feet the reporters are in.

Hurricane Milton crossed the line for me, all the major channels were reporting and it was so bad that several had close calls and one was hit in the face with debris. Is this what it comes to? Put employees at risk for their lives to show this channel will go further than the next. I drew the line.

Anderson Cooper was reporting from Bradenton, Florida, and was barely able to stand, the rain was pouring down and he reached won to show how deep the water was a was hit in the face by flying debris. He sought safety after that. the situation could have been much worse.

The National Hurricane Center reported Milton reached Category 5 status twice and had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph when it hit Siesta Key, Florida, near where Anderson was reporting.

Anderson was working with Bill Weir who was in St Petersburg and was washed away. Why is this acceptable corporate behavior?

Social Media was blowing up with comments of concern for the safety of the reports but where were The corporations they work for? Do they feel this is dramatic television that people want to watch so they can make more money? Bullshit! This shows a total lack of care for human life!

Anderson was not the only reporter who put their life on the line, so did: Dylan Dryer and Ginger Zee and these are the ones I’ve heard of.

We have to stand up and say enough is enough! Let CNN, GMA, and The Today Show this cruel and unusual behavior by writing to the Media Corporations, taking to Social Media, and sending letters to your local media and your local political representative. Only we can make a difference because their employers will not.

Let’s Celebrate Columbus Day!

To think for one moment about what Christopher Columbus accomplished is mind-blowing. He shaped our world, taught us about countries we didn’t know existed, and built solid teams committed to the cause. I would love to feel what Christopher felt when he landed in America, what was the emotion?

Who was Christopher Columbus?

Christopher Columbus (born between August 26 and October 31?, 1451, Genoa [Italy]—died May 20, 1506, Valladolid, Spain) was a master navigator and admiral whose four transatlantic voyages (1492–93, 1493–96, 1498–1500, and 1502–04) opened the way for European exploration, exploitation, and colonization of the Americas. He has long been called the “discoverer” of the New World, although Vikings such as Leif Eriksson had visited North America five centuries earlier. Columbus made his transatlantic voyages under the sponsorship of Ferdinand II and Isabella I, the Catholic Monarchs of Aragon, Castile, and Leon in Spain. He was at first full of hope and ambition, an ambition partly gratified by his title “Admiral of the Ocean Sea,” awarded to him in April 1492, and by the grants enrolled in the Book of Privileges (a record of his titles and claims). However, he died a disappointed man.

Christopher’s world travels lived on with many new discoveries including the Mayflower heading to America.

I appreciate the time you’ve taken to read a post or two and hope you’ve found something that resonates with you. I have not had a chance to visit your home country yet but it’s on my bucket list.

I’ve recently struck up a friendship with a woman in Latvia, and she has shared incredible photos of the countryside which gives me a taste of where she lives. You can find Ilze at A Day in the Life of a Latvian Mom. Yesterday I wrote a special post of support for Ukraine, you can find it here.

I look forward to seeing you again soon and please take good care of yourself in the meantime.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence not only traumatizes the woman but also their children. My mother married my stepfather when I was seven years old and I watched him beat her to a pulp almost daily until I moved out at 12 years old. She screamed out in pain, begged for her life, and cared for her wounds privately to not set him off again. He was an alcoholic but that is not what made him an abuser, that came from within for reasons no one will know.

I watched him drag her down the hall, beating her head from side to side so she would hit both walls, all the while she was begging and crying for him to stop. What’s crazy is that I hated my mother, she was my abuser but down deep she was my mother and it pained me to watch her be treated that way. She stayed married to him until he was beating her and my brother took out a shotgun and made him leave.

You might ask “Why didn’t she just leave?” There are so many reasons women don’t leave, one is their children. How do you prepare to leave when you are watched like a hawk? How do you squirrel away enough money to live, relocate, move your kids out of school, and pay rent? It’s nearly impossible. One attitude the abuser takes is that they own the woman and they will go to any lengths to keep her. To get her to come back, the most common is the sweet personality change and wooing her back only to beat her more.

At the same time, they are beating a woman, they are also degrading her and some women think they deserve it over time which causes them to stay. Some women stay out of fear and others know they will be hunted down, some will have a child kidnapped or the abuser will call the police claiming she left with the kids and make up a wild story that the police have to check out.

I’ve met many women while blogging who were in violent relationships and saw what they went through to leave, the heartbreak after, and all the horrific acts towards them and each one was so traumatic you ask yourself, “How did they make it?” Each one is a survivor!

It’s important to know that men also have violent relationships. There can be shame involved and that is why many men don’t come forward but they are not forgotten. They are survivors as well and often carry a big burden by not seeking help or telling anyone.

How to Offer Support

  1. Get Resources – don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help.
  2. Supporting Survivors – what to say and how to help
  3. Bystander Intervention – real-life examples to help prepare you to take action
Of course, if you see, hear, or suspect that someone is in immediate danger, call 911 immediately.
