Book Review for Sometimes by Joann Howeth

I want to thank Trigger Publishing Editor Andrea Marchiano for sharing Sometimes by Joann Howeth. I have enjoyed and learned so much from children’s books. Parents today have a choice of what tools they use to raise their children. There are no children’s books like the ones from Trigger, you must check out their complete selection of children’s and teen’s books. 

These are great books for Grandparents to have around so they can reinforce the way you’re trying to help your child.

A must-have for every library, classroom, and therapist’s office, this book will reassure struggling children that they are not alone and help them find a safe and healthy outlet for their troubles.

My Thoughts

This is the most serious children’s book I’ve read and think all children need to read this book because it shows them that sometimes you have to tell your secrets to someone you can trust. This book will help children struggling with divorce, lack of money, or other struggles that go on behind closed doors. One very important piece of information is missing, it’s her name. This goes along with her secret. 

She has many secrets that she keeps to herself and the pressure it puts on her is heavy. Her Dad is gone and her mother is in a bad place, it could be from mental health issues or she just can’t make ends meet. Often times when she goes to the refrigerator there is no milk, or when she wants to wash her hair there is no shampoo and the house is stacked full and running over including the moldy dishes. 

She is not allowed to participate in school activities or go to barbecues and is isolated from friends because she doesn’t want anyone to know her secrets.  

She feels so alone and embarrassed and her mother has said no one can come into their house. She has no friends except the neighbor who is kind to her. Her room is filled with items her mother has collected and it crowds out her sleeping space, sometimes she sleeps in a chair or will sit on the stoop.

Her neighbor has a good idea of what is going on and she offers her a string cheese, an apple, and a hug on the way home from school. One day she realized her neighbor knew what was going on and asked her not to tell. Her trusted friend, Mrs. McGeorger said sometimes you have to share with someone. 

This is happening today much more than we know it and we can’t judge or blame the children. I had many secrets growing up, I was abused and my step-father was an alcoholic. I didn’t want any friends to come to my house for fear of getting a glimpse of what was truly happening. I didn’t trust anyone, that was a heavy burden for a child to carry around every day. 

This book is for parents, grandparents, therapists, and schools, all children need exposure to what can happen behind closed doors, it may help a child come forward or at least make them less judgemental. I love this book, it was hard to swallow but I could relate so clearly and know there are plenty of children that have secrets.

Do You Have Painsomnia?

You’ve probably heard the term or worse yet suffer from Painsomnia yourself. If the term is new to you, here’s the short version. A person experiences insomnia due to pain preventing them from falling asleep or staying asleep.

“Sleep helps our bodies rest and heal, so good-quality sleep is vital for people with chronic illnesses. However, painsomnia can make a good night of sleep feel like a pipe dream. Fortunately, medical researchers are starting to learn more about the condition and how patients can cope.”

I have the type of Painsomnia that keeps me up after waking from pain and makes it impossible to go back to sleep. My sleep medicine has worn off by then and no it’s just pain against sleep, and sleep rarely wins.

I have tried several hacks to help go back to sleep with mixed results. I have an essential oil stick with a Lavander fragrance that’s supposed to relax you but I can’t tell it does any good. The one item that has worked this past week is Delta 8 gummies. I take one right after waking up and they do relieve stress and keep my mind from wondering allowing me to go back to sleep.

I have to point out that I’m living without pain medication right now so it can be a challenge when I have to sleep on my shoulders and hips. No back or stomach sleeping for me.

What can you do if you are struggling with Painsomnia?

Better Sleep Habits

The MD Anderson Sleep Center recommends that people adopt new habits into their nightly routine. These habits help form the foundation for good sleep hygiene:

  • Don’t use phones or computers before bed, as the blue light from the screen can disrupt sleep and cause eye strain.
  • Avoid taking long naps during the day.
  • Make your bedroom cool and dark.
  • Avoid eating heavy foods or exercising right before you sleep.

Sleep Aids

If you have trouble sleeping, your healthcare provider may prescribe sleep aids or encourage you to try over-the-counter medications. These drugs can help regulate your circadian rhythm and lull you into slumber. Melatonin supplements help regulate your sleep cycle.9

A study from Cureus journal found that ashwagandha, a medicinal herb, can help people fall and stay asleep.10

Prescription drugs may include benzodiazepines, which are often used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Before you try any new supplements or prescriptions, make sure to consult your healthcare provider.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a treatment that encourages people to rethink and change their behaviors. For people with insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy may help,11

For example, a person without a sleep routine can work with a therapist to start better habits before bed. If anxious thoughts are keeping you up at night, cognitive behavioral techniques can teach you to stop those spiraling thoughts and focus on other, more restful thoughts.

If your painsomnia makes you feel helpless, those worries can make it even harder for you to get sleep. You may blame yourself or blame your body if you’re struggling with painsomnia. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you cope with some of that frustration.

Hypnotherapy

While hypnotherapy is not a proven cure for painsomnia, some researchers have found that hypnosis might improve insomnia.12Hypnotherapy is an alternative medicine where practitioners use hypnosis and the power of suggestion to guide patients through various concerns.

Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for your healthcare provider or your current medications. Some researchers describe hypnotherapy as a sort of placebo. In either case, hypnosis can lull you into deep relaxation. This relaxation may help people with painsomnia fall asleep.

There’s no one size fits everyone but there are options for those who suffer from Painsomnia. I haven’t found the answer yet but did sleep until 2:00 AM this morning.

My Migraine Story Had A Simple Solution

I wanted to share my painful two-year journey with you in hopes some of you will have the same problem and be a blessing to get treatment like I did.

Everyone’s migraine story is different. I had maybe a half dozen migraines when out of the blue they hit me like a hammer. First, it was one to two days a week and not completely debilitating. After a very short period of time, they escalated to four or five a week and did start to impact my life.

My doctor had me take Beta-Blockers at first to help, boy that was terrible. My blog pressure got so low, that I could hardly lift my arms and legs and was having trouble driving. He changed me to a different type of preventative medication and gave me a full supply of Sumatratophan injections.

I was at the height of my career and daily migraines were dramatically impacting my ability to keep my client appointments, I had to often reschedule meetings. It took a good hour after an injection to get back on the road to pick up with my day.

This nightmare went on for two years, I don’t know how I stayed sane and kept my job. Let alone remain a top performer at my company.

During a follow-up appointment, my doctor said he’s just read an article on the plane about how your Sinuses can cause migraines. He referred me to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor and I found my answer. I had a Deviated Septum which was pressing on the nerves and causing the migraines. A simple day surgery corrected the problem and I’ve had very few since then.

This is just a note about nose surgery. I don’t know how they do it today since my migraines were during the ’90s. My doctor did not believe in packing the nose. Basically, I had to use these long Q-tips and put Vaseline way back in my nose several times a day. This is my preferred method.

Please forgive me if this doesn’t flow very well, I wrote this the day after returning home from the hospital and my mind wasn’t so clear. I hope you all make sense to you.

New Study Doubles Down on ‘Troubling’ Presence of Lead in Popular Protein Powders — It’s Gotten ‘Even Worse’

Protein powders and shakes! What’s next? Recall after recall makes me question what is safe to eat. The study is from Consumer Reports which is a highly respected organization.

A new report continues to highlight the “troubling” presence of lead in some protein powders and shakes as the products’ popularity remains high.

Earlier this year, a Clean Label Project report found that well over half of the plant-based protein powders, organic protein powders and chocolate-flavored protein powders tested were over the California Proposition 65 safety thresholds for toxic metals. Now, a study from Consumer Reports reaffirms the high presence of lead in many protein powders, calling the results “troubling.”

Like the Clean Label Project report, Consumer Reports also found that plant-based products were the worst offenders for elevated lead levels.

For testing, Consumer Reports anonymously bought multiple samples of the products over a three-month period starting in November 2024. The purchases were made from online retailers like Amazon, as well as at supermarkets like Whole Foods in New York state. The organization notes that because “the results are based on an average of these samples, which were collected over a specific period of time, they may not mirror current contaminant levels in every product.”

About 70 percent of the 23 products tested by Consumer Reports contained over 120 percent of 0.5 micrograms per day of lead, which is the organization’s “level of concern.”

Consumer Reports outright recommended against consuming two products based on their heavy metal presence — Naked Nutrition’s Mass Gainer powder and Huel’s Black Edition powder.

In response, Naked Nutrition said in a statement that the brand takes “our customers’ health and product transparency extremely seriously and have reviewed the findings closely.” Naked Nutrition said, in part, “While Consumer Reports did not share its complete lab data, we reviewed the available information and verified results through independent third-party testing, which confirmed that no heavy metals exceeded FDA reference intake levels for adults, including for sensitive groups such as women of childbearing age.”

Huel also responded to the claims with a statement and provided further comment to PEOPLE.

“Trace minerals such as lead occur naturally in our planet; crops and plants absorb them from the soil. The levels of lead in the Consumer Reports study is below the amount present in many everyday food items, including fruits and vegetables,” Huel said.

“The Consumer Reports article is based on California’s Proposition 65, which uses an ultra conservative threshold of 0.5 micrograms of lead per day,” a “uniquely cautious regulation rather than an internationally accepted measure of consumer safety.”

The statement continued: “Over the past three years, we have carried out 17 independent tests on Huel Black Edition powder alone, with results consistently showing lead levels between 1.5 and 2.2 micrograms per 90 g serving. These results are well within all recognised safety limits. Huel has also recently been accredited by NSF, the gold standard for product safety and quality, and the most recent NSF report showed undetectable levels of lead.”

Other products Consumer Reports suggested be limited to once a week, or only taken occasionally. See the full list of the 23 products they tested, here.

The FDA said it will be reviewing the findings from Consumer Reports testing, though the administration notably has a higher threshold for daily lead consumption than California (on which Consumer Reports based their recommendations). According to The New York Times, the FDA finds that 2.2 micrograms of lead per day in children, and 8.8 micrograms per day in women of childbearing age, could cause health concerns. In general, dietary supplements live in a “regulatory gray area,” Consumer Reports notes.

Rose Goldman, MD, an associate professor of medicine and physician at Cambridge Health Alliance in Medford, Mass., told Consumer Reports that repeated or continuous exposure to lead causes the greatest risk of danger. Goldman also noted that no amount of lead can technically be considered safe.

Some of the health risks from chronic lead exposure include immune suppression, reproductive problems and kidney damage, among other things.

“It’s very important to overall try to keep lead exposure to the lowest possible based on eating healthy foods and avoiding products like supplements that add unnecessary lead to your diet,” Pieter Cohen, an associate professor at Harvard medical school and a general internist at Cambridge Health Alliance, told CBS News after reviewing the study’s results.

Consumer Reports specified, though, that many of the protein products tested are fine to be consumed occasionally — and even those with the highest lead levels will not cause immediate harm.

What are you most proud of in your life?

I made a promise to my Grandparents at a young age that I would take care of them so they could die at home. They were both adamant about it and how could I not deliver. I retired in 2005 to help my Gramps while Granny was dying, my face on hers and she died, it’s a feeling that’s complex and a bit hard to explain. My Gramps had Chronic Kidney Dieases and in 2010 his health fell rapidly. I moved in for five months to take care of him and to keep an eye on him, keeping him out of trouble. The blessing with Chronic Kidney Dieases is it a peaceful death, no pain and they just slip into a come for a couple of days before they die.

I knew the day he would start slippping into a coma and called the immediate family. I made is favorite meal of potato soup. This was the first time he got in the hospital bed, he was determined to live and said staying in a hospital bed was giving up. Hospice had arrived at the house and set up their equipment, it a trained skill to no how much longer a person has to live.

Those five months were exhausting, frustrating, missing my husband yet we grew even closer, learned so much about him and his daily habits. I made the istake of buy regular wrong flavor of Cheerios, wow, I heard about that for days even after going to the store that day to buy the correct flavor. It’s the same flavor I eat today.

Gramps had only told a couple of family members he was dying, one day I set next to him with the phone book and said it was time to let his family and friends know. I had never seen my Gramps emotional or cry before and it broke my heart. I dialed each persons number for him and handed him the phone.

I am forever blessed to have been am to grant their wishes and being a caregiver changed my life.

Frozen Vegetable Recalled in Stores Nationwide for Potential Listeria Contamination

The recalled product was distributed throughout the United States

Two types of frozen spinach have been recalled.

Sno Pac Foods’ Del Mar 35 Lb. Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach and Sno Pac 10 Oz. Organic Frozen Cut Spinach have been recalled due to potentially being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (commonly known as listeria), according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The product was distributed in stores throughout the United States. 

Several grocery stores and retailers, including Foodtown, Lincoln Market, HarvesTime Foods and Midamar, appear to sell the product. General distributors listed on Sno Pac’s website include Ace Natural, Azure Standard, Iowa Food Hub, Kehe and UNFI.

The frozen spinach product comes in a 35-lb. box with lot codes 250107A, 250107B, 250107C, 250107D, 2501071 and 2501073 with a Jan. 7, 2027, expiration date; or in a 10-oz. retail package marked with lot codes SPM1.190.5 with a July 9, 2027, expiration date, SPC1.160.5 with a June 9, 2024, expiration date, SPC2.160.5 with a June 9, 2027, expiration date and SPM1.097.5 with an April 7, 2027, expiration date. 

The recall was issued after a case of spinach from the company’s supplier tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The company has suspended the production of the product during its investigation. 

Listeria infections can be life-threatening for older adults, pregnant people, newborns and those with weakened immune systems.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, confusion, loss of balance and seizures. 

On Oct. 6, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a health alert after spinach used in HelloFresh ready-made meals tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published the warning after FreshRealm, a California-based company that produces meals for HelloFresh, reported that routine testing found traces of listeria. This bacterium can cause serious illness in vulnerable populations and was found in the spinach used in two products. 

The products named in the announcement were the Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey. The meals, which were shipped directly to customers, are part of a wider concern about listeria contamination across several ready-to-eat food brands. 

That outbreak, traced to Nate’s Fine Foods in Roseville, Calif., has sickened at least 20 people and resulted in four deaths, according to CBS News.

Book Review For Degloved: Every Scar Has A Story

About the Author

On October 18th 2014, Adelaide was in a bike crash that would change her life. She went through the driver’s side window of a car that pulled in front of her, suffering injuries that almost killed her – and emotional trauma that would continue for years to come. In addition to facing the physical injuries and PTSD, Adelaide worried about how the crash would affect her ability to cope with her bipolar II. After an arduous recovery, she returned to riding, eventually qualifying to become a professional triathlete. She is an advocate for cyclists’ safety and strives to help others who have suffered life-threatening crashes. Adelaide lives with her husband Kennett and their dog Maybellene.

When the red Fiat pulled out in front of Adelaide, she squeezed her bike’s brakes so hard that she left 50 feet of skid marks along the highway. The last thing she remembers is being lifted into the ambulance and someone saying, “Her face is peeled off.”

She spent five days in a medically-induced coma, during which surgeons picked glass from her face, reconstructed bones and inserted a stomach tube. She spent another six days unable to talk, at times gasping for air, enduring leech treatments to keep her necrotizing lip alive, and fearing a crippling bipolar episode. Without knowing what neurological damage or permanent disfigurement she’d be left with, her boyfriend Kennett proposed to Adelaide daily in the hospital, until she became conscious. But her recovery would extend far beyond the hospital and the visible physical injuries. 

DEGLOVED is about perseverance as well as failure, written to give hope to those living with mental illness, and anyone who has had a traumatic event thrust upon them, which threatened to destroy their lives.

My Thoughts

Where do you go after an accident almost cost took your life? For Adelaide, it’s moving forward slowly with an eye on recovery and sharing her story to help others. Not only was she in a coma, but also had reconstructive surgery, leech treatments, and fears that her Bipolar Disorder will pop its ugly head.

When you suffer from a traumatic injury it can cause PTSD and slow the recovery process. It can be more complicated if you have a mental illness, like Bipolar Disorder. For me, stress is a huge trigger for my Bipolar Disorder and it’s something I have to keep an eye on. It can throw me into depression very quickly.

Degloved is a book of tragedy and triumph with great lessons to learn about life after unsurmountable odds. Adelaide is a strong person and her perseverance against the odds gave her life back. She’s also a walking example of what our body can do when it comes back from hell.

Adelaide pushes herself thru unimaginable odds to go on to not only compete again but is now a professional Triathlete.

This book is for anyone who has been involved in a traumatic event or knows someone that has. The book is great for caregivers.

I recommend the book hands down. It’s a great read and a very inspiring story.

Pasta Dish Sold at Walmart and Kroger Recalled for Possible Listeria Contamination as Outbreak Involves Multiple Deaths

Customers are encouraged to either destroy the product or return it for a full refund

A ready-to-eat pasta dish sold across the United States has been recalled due to possible Listeria contamination.

FreshRealm is voluntarily recalling three of its chicken fettuccine Alfredo products, the brand and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service(FSIS) shared in respective statements on June 17. The recall applies to all products manufactured before the recall date.

The contamination was found by FSIS in a routine sample collection of FreshRealm’s chicken fettuccine Alfredo in March of this year. According to FSIS, the strain of Listeria found in the sample is the same strain linked to three deaths, one fetal loss and 17 instances of illnesses, across 13 states, from August 2024 to May 2025.

FreshRealm determined via purchase records that two ill people had bought chicken fettuccine Alfredo products from the brand, while two other sick individuals “verbally described chicken fettuccine Alfredo products they purchased,” per FSIS.

“Consumption of food contaminated with Lm [Listeria monocytogenes] can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns,” the FSIS announcement states. “Less commonly, people outside these risk groups are affected.”

Listeriosis is often associated with fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, gastrointestinal symptoms and/or convulsions.

FreshRealm states that the investigation into the root source of the contamination is ongoing.

The following products — sold at Walmart and Kroger — are being recalled, per FreshRealm’s announcement:

  • Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 12.3 oz
  • Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 32.8 oz
  • Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5 oz

For those who have any of the three products, either in their refrigerator or freezer, FreshRealm recommends that they either destroy the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Fresh Relm is also responsible for recent spinach recalls.

Several products have been recalled recently for Listeria. What concerns me is that no one knows the products are contaminated until there is a recall. It’s unsettling.

Do lazy days make you feel rested or unproductive?

“Lazy” days is relative to each person because we all think differently about what the word lazy means. Having a lazy day can make me feel resented yet there was a time when I would have found it unproductive.

When I’m struggling with my mental health and spend more time in bed, I don’t feel rested or unproductive, I’m taking care of myself. When I was at the top of my career, my mental health was at a low point yet I kept pushing myself until I couldn’t anymore. Many people do the same and the reasons are many.

I enjoy a simpler life now, past the shallow parts, and when I need a lazy day, I take it.

Kevin Jonas’ Wife Danielle Jonas Reveals Lyme Disease Diagnosis: ‘They Tried to Tell Me It Was Anxiety’

Kevin Jonas‘ wife Danielle Jonas was experiencing symptoms that her doctor first attributed to anxiety, only to be diagnosed with Lyme disease after undergoing a biopsy.

In a new interview with Parents published on Thursday, Oct. 9, Danielle, 39, opened up about her diagnosis and how it affects her daily life.

She first decided to see a doctor after noticing that her hair was shedding.

“They tried to tell me it was anxiety. Finally, I had a biopsy that showed I actually had Lyme disease,” Danielle told Parents.

Lyme disease is an illness caused by Borrelia bacteria, usually transmitted through the bite of a tick, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms vary but can include rash, muscle soreness, fever, fatigue, chronic pain and more.

“I also had eczema on my scalp, which was likely from the inflammation [caused by Lyme disease],” Danielle said. “The hair loss was very traumatic. I got to a point where I wanted to wear a wig.”

Eczema, a form of dermatitis, is a non-contagious skin condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin, per Mayo. The chronic condition can cause irritation but flare-ups can be managed through diet, as well as ointments or creams.

To help with her hair loss, Danielle tried wearing hair extensions. These then irritated her eczema further because of the way they pulled at her scalp.

“I had to go out and do things with Kevin. I just wanted to feel like myself,” she told Parents. The couple has been married since 2009 and shares daughters Alena, 11, and Valentina, 8.

Tru Fru Snacks Recalled for Potential Metal Contamination

Metal can cause ‘traumatic injury including laceration and perforation’ in digestive organs

Tru Fru Fruit snacks recall

Tru Fru snacks are being recalled for a possible presence of metal.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Sept. 29 that Georgia Nut Company, a third party manufacturer for Tru Fru, had issued a voluntary recall of some of its freeze dried products. The product — which is sold nationwide at stores like Albertson’s, CVS, Food Lion, H-E-B, Hungryroot, Ingles Markets, Kroger, Stew Leonard’s and Target — was recalled for a possible metal contamination.

The presence of possible metal could contribute to “traumatic injury including laceration and perforation of tissues” in digestive organs, including in the mouth, stomach and intestine, per the FDA. As of Sept. 29, no injuries or illnesses were reported.

The recall was implemented after a customer notified the company about the possible contamination.

Specific Tru Fru freeze dried products are part of the recall. The FDA lists the products’ names, item numbers, UPCs and the first four digits/letters of the manufacturing code. The affected products are as follows.

12 Ways You Can Help Yourself Manage Chronic Pain

Chronic pain–defined as ongoing pain that continues for longer than six months–is a common complaint of patients with persistent Lyme disease.

The CDC estimates that 20% of Americans currently live with chronic pain. Estimates range from 10% to 36% of Lyme patients who are diagnosed and treated early are left with chronic symptoms.

For the past 40 years, the medical definition of chronic pain was more narrowly defined, including only those patients with actual or potential tissue damage.

Recently, with the help of researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has made a subtle but important change to the medical definition of pain.

The new definition, “An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damages,” is important as it includes the pain caused by an overstimulated nervous system, commonly associated with chronic pain.

This new more inclusive definition, if adopted by insurance providers, could have a positive impact on access to health care for disempowered and neglected populations.

Defining Chronic pain

If you suffer from chronic pain, you have likely been asked to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10.  As much as you may dislike rating your pain, this information helps your medical provider gauge whether you are making progress with the current treatment plan, or not.

Having worked as a physical therapist for years, I found the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) works better than telling someone to simply “rate your pain on a scale of 0-10,” especially with children.

Because Lyme disease can affect every organ and system of the body, every patient may have a different set of complaints. While neck, joint and muscle pain are very common in early Lyme disease, there are many other types of pain when the disease becomes chronic.

For instance, allodynia is a type of pain that is caused by something that shouldn’t normally cause pain (eg. wind or light touch may feel like sandpaper or a burn.) Menstrual pain, bladder pain, testicular pain, bone pain, and widespread nerve pain are common in chronic Lyme patients.

The “cup theory”

When I explain pain to patients, I use the cup theory. Depending on your age, your brain, and your body, everyone has a different size cup—or a different capacity—for pain. We are each only capable of handling a certain amount of pain. Once your cup is full, you are essentially at a 10 out of 10 on your individual pain scale.

You may have a constant headache filling your cup 1/2 way (or 5:10 on your pain scale), and then your knee starts hurting pushing you up to a 7:10, and then your lower back spasms, and BOOM–your cup is full!

What I’ve found is that if we can help chronic pain patients empty their cup just a little, we can start to make progress. When my daughter was at her worst, I couldn’t get rid of her pain completely. However, if I could help lower her pain even a little bit, she was able to function. Here is some of what I learned along the way.

Self-treatment

For six years, my daughter lived with chronic debilitating pain. Early symptoms included fever, neck stiffness and a migraine that would not subside. Two months later, she developed knee pain and swelling along with back and bone pain. Later, she said soles of her feet felt like she was walking on nails. Periodically, she suffered excruciating abdominal pain and nausea. And the list goes on…

The first year, she was too sick to leave the house, except for doctor and hospital visits. Luckily, as a Physical Therapist (PT), I could provide pain management treatment and modalities at home. Once she began to gain strength, after starting treatment for her infections, she started seeing an outpatient PT, who brought a whole new set of skills to the table. This also relieved me of my dual role as caretaker and healthcare provider—something I don’t recommend.

In the beginning, she was so weak I had to do everything for her. I would wheel her to the bathroom, bring her all her meals, help her get dressed–everything. The treatment I provided was limited to positioning for comfort, passive range of motion, gentle massage, hot/cold, taping/bracing, acupressure and craniosacral therapy. As she got stronger, she learned self-treatment techniques that she continues to use today.

Self-treatment approaches are generally low-cost and low-risk. You can do them on your own schedule in the comfort of your own home. It does require a commitment to changing your daily habits, but they can offer significant improvements in reducing pain and improving your quality of life.

Here are 12 things you can discuss as treatment options with your healthcare provider.

Diet

Most of the immune system originates in the gut. Literally, everything you put into your body is part of the healing process. Or not. You want to support the immune system without feeding inflammation. Fast food, artificial/processed foods, carbs, sugar, gluten, dairy and alcohol are common inflammatory triggers. In my mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) series, I wrote about low histamine diets that help reduce the inflammation associated with MCAS.

Positioning

When you’re in pain, it can be difficult to find a comfortable position. When my daughter was at her worst, she found it difficult to breath when she was lying flat. We added 4-inch wooden blocks under the feet at the head of her bed, and a large wedge pillow to elevate her head. When her back was hurting, it also helped to  put a pillow under her knees.

You can get really creative with pillows. For instance, body pillows or “hug” pillows work well if you are a side sleeper.

While you are sitting, you may want to try out different size pillows or towel rolls for comfort. Putting a pillow on your lap to support your arms or one behind the small of your back may help. As a rule, you want to change positions every 30-60 minutes. This helps prevent pressure sores and muscle stiffness.

Some people find it worth their while to rent a hospital-type bed, where the head and/or feet can be elevated.

Assistive devices

Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath/shower chairs, long-handled reachers (sometimes called grabbers) are all good examples of assistive devices. Items like tray tables, lap tables, bath caddies, tote bags or tinted reading glasses can also make life easier.

Other things designed for reducing pain may include ace bandage wraps, shoulder sling, wrist, knee or ankle braces and shoe orthotics. You may also find over-the-counter topical pain relievers or CBD oil to be helpful. There are stronger topical pain relievers available by prescription.

Pacing

When you are sick you must be very conservative with energy expenditure. Modifying or changing your activities so they do not aggravate your symptoms is extremely important. Restricting, reducing, or spacing out your activities can help reduce pain and fatigue.

The key is to know your limits and stay within them. Pacing is similar to the concept of the “Spoon Theory” where you are only given a small supply of spoons to use each day—so use them wisely. When you are sick is not the time to try to push past the pain. In our house, we found sticking to a schedule that we affectionately call “Groundhog Day” helps to keep the pace.

Active range of motion (ROM) is a simple activity that almost anyone can do, whether lying down, sitting or standing. It helps to bring blood flow to the extremities and maintain or increase flexibility. The idea is to move every joint in the body through its full range. One example is to fully spread your fingers open, then fully close your fist. I recommend starting with the neck and working your way down to shoulders, elbows, wrists, torso, hips, knees, then feet.

If you are extremely de-conditioned, getting in/out of the shower and washing your hair may count as your active range of motion for that day. However, some people may be too weak or in too much pain to move at all. For these people, someone else must assist them with moving the extremities. We call this passive range of motion. While motion is important, the main goal is to make the pain better not worse.

Gentle exercise

Activity in any form can help improve mobility which may help reduce pain. Too much (or the wrong) activity can also make things worse. Once you are able, gentle exercise programs like, walking, stretching, yoga, tai chi, Pilates, and pool therapy can be a great benefit. To begin with, I recommend adding light weights (1-3 lb household items like broom handles or cans of soup work fine) to your ROM stretches.

Sunlight Chair Yoga” is a type of adaptive yoga you may want to look at.

Meditation and mindfulness

Yoga stresses the value of deep breathing. Deep breathing involves the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle that forms the floor to the lungs. Such breathing is also essential to meditation and mindfulness.

The key to diaphragmatic breathing is to focus on deep relaxation and making the exhale portion of your breath twice as long as the inhale.

Meditation and mindfulness can help reduce stress and physiological responses to stress, which in turn, can help reduce pain. I suggest starting with something like Jyothi meditation, which involves simply gazing at a candle.

Stress reduction

Creating art, journaling, gardening, reading a good book, even just sitting outdoors and listening to the sounds of nature can help distract from pain. Research has shown that music helps the brain release dopamine our “feel-good” hormone. The important thing is to find something that, gives you hope, brings you joy or something you are grateful for each day.

Hot/cold therapy

For this I recommend getting a “moist” heating pad and ice pack from your local pharmacy and use as directed. Heat can help relax muscle tightness and improve circulation. Cold can reduce inflammation and numb an area of localized pain.

I usually recommend 10-20 min of moist heat for stiffness, and 10-15 min of cold for pain. Certain types of pain may respond better to one than the other, or you may find alternating hot/cold works best. (Note: If you have problems with blood clotting, bleeding or impaired circulation, you should check with your medical provider before using hot/cold.)

Epsom salt

Epsom salt is a combination of magnesium, sulfur and oxygen ions known as magnesium sulfate. Most of the benefits of Epsom salt come from the magnesium, one of the most important minerals in the human body. A magnesium deficiency will create an electrolyte imbalance and can also lead to calcium and/or potassium deficiencies. Among other things, magnesium helps your body produce melatonin and certain neurotransmitters needed for sleep.

I suggest purchasing Epsom salt from your local pharmacy or other reputable supplier to ensure the highest quality and use as directed. Add the salt to a warm bathtub or foot bath. In as little as 15 minutes, it can help relax muscles, improve circulation, loosen joint stiffness, relieve pain and promote calm.

I like to add a few drops of lavender or use a diffuser for additional aroma therapy during bath time. If you don’t have access to a bath or don’t tolerate heat, magnesium can be purchased in gel form and rubbed on your skin.

Getting enough sleep

If you’ve had or have Lyme, you are likely no stranger to insomnia. During the first year of my daughter’s illness, her symptoms would peak after midnight, making it impossible for her to fall asleep until around 6 a.m. Essentially, her days and nights were reversed.

I can tell you from experience, there are a lot of standard techniques for improving sleep hygiene that simply DO NOT work for Lyme patients. So, while you are trying to turn things around, my advice is to sleep when you are tired and nap whenever possible. Even if you can’t sleep, it’s important to lie down. You need at minimum 8 hours of rest every day. Also talk to your doctor about adding a low dose of melatonin.

Other Integrative and Restorative therapies

Modalities to help improve strength, mobility, and flexibility can help to relieve pain temporarily. Over time, improved function may help reduce the underlying cause of the pain. I am a big fan of hands-on treatment by a trained professional.

  • Medications (as prescribed by your physician)

  • Physical therapy
  • Pilates
  • Postural training
  • Psychotherapy
  • Qi gong
  • Reflexology

Laughter is the best medicine

Last but not least I do believe the key to happiness is laughter. Laughter reduces stress hormones like cortisol and releases endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever. My simple advice is to avoid things that cause you stress, fear or anger.

Watch comedy or movies with happy endings. Stay connected with someone you can be honest with, one who listens and can make you laugh. Above all else, never give up hope.

Ask the Doctor: Why Do I Get Depressed Every Fall?

Many people react to changes in light with shifts in energy level and mood, and for some, the fall is a difficult time.

One of the characteristics of depression in bipolar disorder is the variable patterns of the course. “Patterns” and “course” generally refer to recurrent themes: something predictable over time. Experiencing depression at specific times of the year is referred to as having a “seasonal pattern,” while daily fluctuations are termed “diurnal variation.”

Why Do I feel Depressed in the Fall?

The change in seasons affects everyone. The intensity and duration of light are what determine patterns for all living entities: new green leaves appear in the spring, and bears hibernate in the winter. The privilege of being alive is dependent on sunlight. 

Many people react to changes in light with shifts in energy level and mood, and for some, the fall is a difficult time. Days become shorter; we see the migrations of birds and reflect that the leaves fall, and winter is on its way. Joni Mitchell captures a doleful fall mood in the lyrics for her song “Urge for Going”: “And all that stays is dying and all that lives is getting out.”

For those experiencing depression at any time of the year, it is wise to keep a diary, even if you only write down a single word on your calendar that captures your mood on a given day. Over time, you can look back and, in discussion with healthcare providers, explore whether there is a seasonal pattern. This is important, as everyone is different. The seasonal behaviors of some mammals are highly predictable, but less so for humanity. 

If a seasonal pattern is identified, you can anticipate and prepare more easily. For those who experience depression in the fall, it is wise to plan how you will mitigate the impact. Schedule an appointment with your care provider well in advance of the anticipated challenging time. 

Recall what the symptoms were in previous depressions and put contingency plans in place. For example, if sleep is typically a problem, discuss this with your doctor or therapist. Cover all options, including light therapy, medications, and talk therapies. If time away — somewhere warm and sunny — is available to you, consider it.

Can You Explain ‘Diurnal Variation,’ as Opposed to ‘Seasonal Patterns’?

Many people experience daily patterns in which they wake up in a lousy mood with limited energy and the ability to engage with the world. As the morning passes, mood may gradually begin to pick up, and often things feel better by lunchtime or so. This is what clinicians refer to as diurnal variation. 

While it is frequently incapacitating, it can be useful in monitoring mood changes. Individuals who are beginning to enter a depressed phase often note that mornings are getting increasingly worse; during the improvement phase, they may notice that the time to feeling better shortens. 

The basis for diurnal variation is not known; it is likely related to your internal body clock, the driver of the sleep/wake cycle. While it is often a measure of depressed mood, many of my patients tell me they are just not “a morning person,” and they choose to start their day mid- or late morning. If your lifestyle aligns with this pattern, that’s totally fine. 

However, obligations often require a fixed schedule, and therefore, adaptations are necessary. Again, work with your support team to develop a plan, which may involve a combination of medical and/or environmental strategies. Allocate weekend time to “sleep in” and catch up. Coordinate with your family around schedules. Keep a mood diary and share it with your care providers. 

Unstable moods are a part of bipolar disorder and come in many variations. Learning your own mood patterns and developing a strategy with your healthcare team and family is an essential part of successful management.

Potentially Radioactive Frozen Shrimp Recall Expands to Kroger Stores in 31 States

The announcement comes about a month after Walmart and Southwind Foods of California announced recalls of frozen shrimp products

More frozen shrimp has been recalled for potential radioactive contamination.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, AquaStar Corp recalled nearly 70,000 bags of frozen shrimp from Kroger stores across the United States due to a potential contamination with cesium-137, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 

The announcement comes about a month after Walmart and Southwind Foods of California issued recalled frozen shrimp products for the same reason. 

The latest recall affects about 49,920 bags of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp and about 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp. The company also recalled about 17,264 bags of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers. 

The company stated in the announcement that the frozen shrimp was recalled “because [it] may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with cesium-137.”

Cesium-137, abbreviated to Cs-137, is a “man-made radioisotope of cesium,” per the FDA.

In addition to Kroger, the affected frozen shrimp products were sold at Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foodsco, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, Pick ‘n Save, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC stores in 31 states, per the FDA.

Those states include Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.

The products were sold between June 12 and Sept. 17.  

The recalled Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp is sold in a clear printed bag with a thick blue band across the top with yellow and red details. The products have a UPC of 20011110643906 with lot codes 10662 5085 10, 10662 5097 11, 10662 5106 11, 10662 5107 10, 10662 5111 11, 10662 5112 10, 10662 5113 10, 10662 5113 11, 10662 5114 10 and 10662 5114 11. The best buy dates on the affected products range from March 26, 2027 to April 24, 2027. 

The Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, has clear plastic packaging with a white label with green stripes on the top. The products have a UPC of 011110626196 with lot code 10662 5112 11 and a best buy date of Oct. 22, 2027 or 10662 5113 10 with Oct. 23, 2027. 

Additionally, the recalled AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers; net wt. 1.25 lbs., has a white bag with a black top and a blue bottom. The bag has a photo of the shrimp skewers. The products have a UPC of 731149390010 with lot codes 10662 5127 10, 10662 5128 11, 10662 5133 11 and 10662 5135 10. The best buy dates range from Nov. 7, 2027 to Nov. 15, 2027. 

Those who purchased the aforementioned frozen shrimp products “should not consume the product and should dispose of or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” according to the FDA. 

The agency stated that it is currently investigating reports of Cs-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by Indonesian company PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati.

The FDA previously recalled three lots of frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.

Mere days later, Southwind Foods of California issued a recall for 13 shrimp products sold under the brand names Sand Bar, Best Yet, Great American, Arctic Shores and First Street. The bags of frozen shrimp were distributed to retailers, distributors and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and Washington. 

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies Cs-137 as “a soft, flexible, silvery-white metal that becomes liquid near room temperature.”

“Internal exposure to Cs-137 through ingestion or inhalation allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues, especially muscle tissue, which increases cancer risk,” the EPA website states.

Radioactive? I haven’t seen a recall for a radioactive food products before. Each recall is more concerning, how do we know our food is safe? Is skipping frozen food the answer?

Stress and anxiety are common experiences that can have a significant impact on your daily life. While some stress is normal and even necessary, too much stress can lead to problems. In many cases, stress and anxiety can be caused by a combination of factors. For example, someone who is dealing with a serious illness may also be experiencing financial stressors. Or someone who is going through a divorce may also be facing work-related challenges.

While some amount of stress and anxiety is normal and even beneficial, as it can help you to stay alert and motivated, too much can have negative consequences. Prolonged periods of stress can lead to physical health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive issues, and sleep problems.

When it feels like the world is against you and everything is going wrong, it can be difficult to cope. Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and hopeless. But there are ways to manage stress and anxiety and regain control of your life.

Here Are Some Tips To Help You Keep Stress And Anxiety At Bay:

1. Understand what causes your stress and anxiety

Are you someone who internalizes stress and worries a lot? Do you have trouble letting go of things? Are you constantly comparing yourself to others? Identifying the root cause of your stress and anxiety is the first step in learning how to manage it. Once you know what’s triggering your feelings of stress and anxiety, you can start to address them.

2. Challenge your negative thoughts

Negative thinking is one of the main contributors to stress and anxiety. If you’re constantly putting yourself down, ruminating on past failures, or worrying about the future, it’s no wonder you’re feeling stressed out! Start by challenging your negative thoughts. When you catch yourself thinking something negative, ask yourself if it’s really true. Chances are, it’s not.

3. Practice relaxation techniques

There are a number of different relaxation techniques you can try to help ease stress and anxiety. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization are all effective ways to relax your mind and body. Experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you.

4. Get moving

Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and boost your mood. Even just a few minutes of physical activity can make a big difference. Taking a brisk walk, going for a swim, or taking a yoga class are all great options.

5. Connect with others

Isolation can make stress and anxiety worse. Make an effort to connect with friends, family, or a support group. Talking about your stress and anxiety can help you feel better and may give you some helpful perspectives.

6. Make time for yourself

It’s important to make time for activities that make you happy and help you relax. Whether it’s reading, listening to music, spending time in nature, or taking a yoga class, find an activity that brings you joy and stick with it. Making time for yourself will help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

7. Be patient

Learning how to manage stress and anxiety takes time. Be patient with yourself, and don’t expect overnight results. Remember that you’re not alone in this journey and that you can get through this. With a little effort, you can start to feel better and live a more peaceful life.

8. Avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms

It’s also important to avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as alcohol or drug misuse. These can actually make your stress and anxiety worse in the long run. In addition, they can also lead to other health problems. On the other hand, it can be extremely positive to find good coping mechanisms for the things that are affecting your mental health. 9. Make lifestyle changes

Lifestyle changes can also help reduce stress and anxiety. Small Lifestyle Changes To Make When Living With Chronic Pain

Living in constant pain can make you feel like you are alone and there is no one who understands what you are going through. Chronic pain conditions vary and each person living with chronic pain will have their own pain thresholds and triggers. At times, it may seem like there is nothing you can do, especially when traditional pain medication doesn’t have any effect. It is at times like this when people try other methods of medicating.

For some, different types of pains and symptoms can be managed or even eradicated with a few changes to your diet. It may seem futile however if nothing else is working you have nothing to lose by trying. Adapt what you do during your day-to-day life to see if different things affect your pain level. For example, many chronic pain patients credit the sun and warmth for lowering their pain levels. For this reason, it could be worth looking into how you can increase your vitamin D intake and get more sun into your life.

Many people find adding exercise into their lives can help with certain types of pain. Working up slowly to adding beneficial exercise to your daily routine as and when you can help you to look after your body despite your pain levels. Yoga, pilates, and simple stretching exercise will help you to remain fit and supple and in some cases decrease your pain levels.

There is no scientific evidence that links drastic diet changes with the eradication of pain from chronic pain conditions. However, it is thought that certain types of foods can inflame the body in different ways making pain worse. From cutting out dairy to reduce additional IBS symptoms or abdominal pain to avoiding nightshade foods to reduce pain and inflammation for Fibromyalgia, arthritis, and more.

There have also been suggestions that eating clean and switching to a more plant-based diet can help control pain levels. While fatty and processed foods aren’t healthy for anyone when overconsumed, there is nothing to lose by changing up your diet and eating a more natural diet, and reducing your meat, specifically red meat intake.

Many chronic pain sufferers will all tell you that sleeping is a problem. It’s a vicious circle to be told you need to get more sleep yet sleep is elusive due to your pain. But by creating as relaxing a sleep environment as can help you to relax even if you can’t sleep. Your body repairs itself during sleep and getting good quality sleep remains important despite your health condition. 

Find your optimal sleeping temperature and noise level, try using a white noise app if you needed, and also use comfortable bedding. Set your limits for screen time and electronics and try to create a relaxing bedtime routine that indicates you are ready for sleep. This won’t always be possible but it is worth persevering to help you improve your sleep quality.

What have you been putting off doing? Why?

I was recently diagnosed with a lung dieases which has caused damaged my airways. My doctor prescribed a Nebulizer to clear my lungs, it requires two treatments a day. It takes 50 minutes a day which includes cleaning the attachments. I haven’t started the treatments yet because I’ve been battling three other chronic illnesses and only sleeping a couple of hours a night. The box is on my desk in clear view and I do want to start the treatments, just not today.

Jesse Ruben’s “Monster” tells the story Lyme patients know all too well

Ten years ago, singer-songwriter Jesse Ruben was desperately ill with Lyme disease—wracked with pain, clouded by brain fog, and battling depression. In the midst of all that, he discovered that if he stayed up well past midnight, the fog would lift somewhat.

“So I’d keep myself up till 6, 7, 8 in the morning,” he recalls, “because it was the only time I had a cognitive thought.”

One morning in 2015, during one of those more lucid hours, he sang the beginning of a new song into his cell phone—and promptly forgot about it. Years later, he stumbled upon the audio file and decided to finish what he had started.

The result is Monster, a raw and powerful song that captures the pain, frustration, and mental anguish that so many Lyme patients know all too well:

“There’s something wrong here, doctor, and I don’t know what it is… 

But there’s a monster in my body and it’s living in my limbs… 

And it’s tearing through my system like a hurricane wind that won’t stop…”

First “We Can” and then he couldn’t

Before he became ill, Ruben was a rising star in the music world, with a popular song called “We Can.” It was a feel-good, upbeat tune that he wrote after running his very first marathon.

Then everything changed.

It started with flu-like symptoms that wouldn’t go away, followed by dizziness and nausea.

Doctors ran tests and told him everything looked fine. But Jesse knew something wasn’t right. He struggled to breathe and couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs. The brain fog got so bad he’d forget the lyrics to his own songs—music he’d poured his heart into.

He saw more than ten doctors. Each gave him a different answer: vitamin D deficiency, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome. None of it fit.

Eventually, Jesse found a doctor who properly diagnosed and treated him for Lyme disease, and he began to heal. He returned to music with renewed purpose—and his single This Is Why I Need You struck a chord around the world. It’s now been streamed over 70 million times across various platforms, a testament to how deeply his message resonates.

Alongside his musical comeback, Jesse became a passionate advocate for others facing Lyme disease. He co-founded Generation Lyme, a nonprofit created to combat the isolation and confusion that so many people with Lyme disease experience.

The organization hosts free Zoom gatherings for patients, parents, and supporters and also offers the Generation Lyme podcast.

If you had a million dollars to give away, who would you give it to?

Having a million dollars would go a long way in supporting the charities that align with my beliefs, like mental health, sexual violence, homeless veterans, and animal recuse organizations. I would take the million dollars, wait until matching funds are available, and split the money among the charities.

Don’t get me wrong, money is great to have yet money is not the way to happiness. I was a millionaire at 38 and can tell you I was miserable, losing it all was the best thing that happened to me. It was difficult yet the lessons learned about living a shallow life changed me for the better.
